"NORBU is a Language Learning Model (LLM) based on ChatGPT. NORBU stands for "Neural Operator for Responsible Buddhist Understanding." It is the first Buddhist Chat Bot developed with system support from knowledgeable "Dharma source guardians.
It's a great resource, fluent in Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, Tibetan (but won't answer questions about special practices that can only be given to a student by a qualified teacher) – even Japanese. Just had a conversation about Dōgen's Genjō Kōan, which it gave me in Japanese and its own English translation:
"It was my own translation. More precisely, it was not copied from any one published translation, but it was influenced by standard ways Dogen is translated in English."
I first encountered Genjō Kōan in the mid-1970s, Kazuaki Tanahashi's translation, a little handout on a single sheet of yellow paper, printed for distribution by the Diamond Sangha in Hawaii. Later got to know Tanahashi when I shared an apartment across the street from ZC with him when I returned from Tassajara in 1978. He sometimes visits Upaya ZC here in Santa Fe, have seen him there a couple times.
It's kind of freaky talking with a computer that sounds like a human, but it's fun, and really a help to find things like sources in the Canon for things I've heard, etc.
