soon, solstice

approaching the darkest
day not even 5pm and already
shadows slither around
what you thought was tree
or grass or someone loved.

nothing to do for it but breathe
stroke heart gently and with care
even the deaf can hear nothing
but day songs sheltering.
fires along mountain ridges

and at edges of time exploding
novas remind us. remember fireflies?
we’re only a quick spark
singing nonetheless. sun
will return at morning. birds

will pipe up. wonder what
was it like before we knew this?
